In a star studded event, Nelson Mandela was recently honored at a high profile charity ball held in his name in Monaco. Mandela was personally welcomed by Price Albert, who gave a speech praising the man affectionately known as Madiba for his tireless fight against poverty, AIDS and crime.

Joining Prince Albert in honoring Mandela were celebrities from across the globe, with a quick snapshot including: Bono from U2, supermodels Naomi Campbell, Petra Nemcova, and Victoria Silvstedt, and US actor Morgan Freeman.

By including items for auction such as the jersey Carl Lewis wore when winning one of his nine Olympic gold medals, football boots worn during last year's World Cup, and a piece of rock from Robben Island - where Mandela was imprisoned by the apartheid government of South Africa for 18 years – the event organizers were able to use history to drive home the reality of the obstacles that Mandela overcame. The organizations that benefited from the event include the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund.

This event in Monaco follows the recent unveiling in London of a larger-than-life statue of the great humanitarian sitting opposite the Houses of Parliament.
