Tina Fey Takes Aim at Todd Akin at Center for Reproductive Rights Gala
Gathering to support women's reproductive rights, some of Hollywood's outspoken women (and some empathetic men) attended the Center for Reproductive Rights gala at Lincoln Center in New York City on Wednesday night (October 24).
Serving as a special guest speaker, Tina Fey addressed the large audience packing the Jazz venue seats which included Jane Seymour, Janeane Garofalo, Stanley Tucci, Tate Donovan, and Jill Flint.
During her speech, the 42-year-old comedic actress said, "I wish we could have an honest and respectful dialogue about these complicated issues, but it seems like we can't right now. And if I have to listen to one more gray-faced man with a $2 haircut explain to me what rape is, I'm going to lose my mind."
Also taking aim at Republican "30 Rock" star Todd Akin before wrapping up her time onstage, Miss Fey barbed, "Todd Akin claims that women can't really get pregnant from a legitimate rape because the body secretes hormones," adding, "Now I can't even finish this sentence without getting dumber; it's making me dumber when I say it — but it's something about the body not being able to get pregnant when it's under physical stress. Mr. Akin, I think you are confusing the phrase 'legitimate rape' with the phrase 'competitive gymnastics.'"
As for the Center for Reproductive Rights, the organization has worked for 20 years using the law to advance reproductive freedom as a fundamental human right that all governments are legally obligated to protect, respect, and fulfill.
