Stephen Colbert Ignites Firestorm of Twitter Controversy with Asian Slur Segment
These days cultural sensitivity is higher than ever, but that’s never prevented Stephen Colbert from going forward with potentially offensive material.
On Wednesday (March 27) the Comedy Central character poked fun at Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder’s attempt end the bad blood between his team and the American Indian community by announcing a new charity to help “Original Americans.”
In response, Colbert referenced his own tension with the Asian American population because of his “Ching Chong Ding Dong” character, and satirically stated that he would start his own organization called “The Ching Chong Ding Dong Foundation For Sensitivity to Orientals or Whatever.”
The show also tweeted, “I am willing to show #Asian community I care by introducing the Ching-Chong Ding-Dong Foundation for Sensitivity to Orientals or Whatever.”
Of course, by Thursday night the hash tag #CancelColbert was trending on Twitter, with users calling for Stephen to step down from the show.
In the past, Colbert has explained that the whole program is a joke- “I do the show in character – and he’s an idiot; he’s wilfully [sic] ignorant of everything we’re going to talk about.”
