American Idol Idolizes Tony Bennett
Tony Bennett is one of the most recognizable voices in American popular music history. He has always been a gentleman, always well spoken and proper. So it’s no wonder that he lit up the night at Fox’s American Idol set last night with positive input and that trademark smile of his.
Bennett was gracious to all the Idol contestants. He came off a kinder and gentler coach than any other we’ve seen thus far. Bennett spoke of beautiful Jordin Sparks voice, that she is “very much in tune, which is rare these days.” On Sanjaya, Bennett commented, “He comes up with something every week. He’s very interesting. He’s got a sense of humor."
As for the rest of the cast, Blake Lewis was missing Bobby Darin’s cool with his performance of “Mack the Knife”. Phil Stacey sang “Night and Day” in the spirit of Frank Sinatra.
Melinda Doolittle’s rendition of “I Got Rhythm” garnered uber respect from Bennett and Simon. “I don’t think we’re ever going to be able to criticize you. This is a problem,” Simon said.
Those are the highlights… tune in to see what happens next! Oh, and thanks go to Tony Bennett for showing Simon and the rest of the sarcastic, pessimistic music critics how to be a true gentleman.
