Box Office: "Guardians of the Galaxy" Orbits the Competition
There was no doubt when looking at box office returns which film would carry the weekend, as "Guardians of the Galaxy" left its competition in another orbit for the three day period of August 1-3, 2014.
The sci-fi adventure film from Marvel nabbed $37.8 million on Friday and will wind up with a total take of $92-95.5 million for the weekend.
Last week's number one, "Lucy" was relegated to second place. The Scarlett Johansson fronted adventure film took in $5.4 million on Friday and will end the three day period with $17-18 million.
Rounding out the top five in earmarked earnings were newcomer "Get On Up" ($14.7 million) in third, the action film "Hercules" ($10.6 million) in fourth, and the previously dominant "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" ($8.4 million).
