Box Office: "The Avengers" Sinks "Battleship" & "The Dictator"
With its record-breaking selling power still in dominant form, "The Avengers" continues its reign atop the box office to begin the weekend of May 18-20, 2012
The Joss Whedon directed superhero blockbuster boasting an all-star cast including Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth nabbed another $15.3 million on Friday and $24 million on Saturday with a projected third weekend total marked at $55 million.
Settling for runner-up status is the newly released Naval film "Battleship", as the Hasbro game based movie starring Alexander Skarsgard, Rihanna, Taylor Kitsch and Brooklyn Decker landed a disappointing $9 million on opening day while pacing towards $25.3 million during its first weekend in theaters.
Rounding out the top five at the box office in estimated totals are the newly released Sacha Baron Cohen helmed comedy "The Dictator" ($17.0 million), followed by last weekend's second place finisher "Dark Shadows" ($12.5 million) and the Kirk Jones directed motion picture "What to Expect When You're Expecting" ($10.3 million).
Also of note, "The Hunger Games" slipped out of the top five for the first time since being released nine weeks ago, as the Jennifer Lawrence starring hit is positioned in seventh with an earnings forecast of $2.8 million.
