Katy Perry & John Mayer Talk “Who You Love” on “Good Morning America”
During their interview on "Good Morning America" Tuesday (December 17), the “Why Georgia” stud and his “Hot N Cold” chick discussed their new duet “Who You Love” and the struggle to navigate the often-complicated waters of dating in Hollywood.
John explained, “You get too close, it's a little too touchy feely and you get too far away and they say 'I don't see chemistry.’”
As for the ditty, Mayer shared, “I had this little chorus for years. And it was 'You love who you love' and I thought that was always going to be a great thing someday to have a song that people could hear and feel that sort of permission.”
"And then it came out again and sometimes you just have to play stuff for other people…and I played it for Don Was, the producer of the record, and he went, 'That's something' and I said, 'I don't know' and then he said, 'Why don't you get Katy to do it?'"
"And my first thought was, 'You can't do that' and then the more I thought about just the music part of it, it made perfect sense. Even if I didn't know Katy, it would have made perfect sense…For me it always had to be about the song…It's a pretty big moving target to be a couple and have a song but I think there's an authenticity to it when you hear it."
Katy piped in, "It transcends us, it's more about the message of the song."
Mayer and Perry also star together in the music video, featuring a mechanical bull and a bunch of couples. “It’s just so authentic. There’s nothing scripted in that video except putting a bull in the middle of the desert,” said John.
“Relationships are kind of like riding a bull," mentioned Katy. “You hang on for dear life and sometimes you get a little buck here and there and sometimes you get things thrown at you but you get back on."
Meanwhile, John sang Perry’s praises after having spent some time with her in the studio- "Katy is a superstar for a reason. That's the thing about working with somebody you love. You get to see them. I had to [make] a video in order to get to see my girlfriend."
