Joaquin Phoenix: Stoned on Letterman?

He’s always kind of been a wild card as far as celebrities go, but last night Joaquin Phoenix was a little extra spaced out when he sat down to do an interview with David Letterman.

The “Walk the Line” actor showed up at the Ed Sullivan Theater for his appearance on “The Late Show” sporting a heavy beard, black sunglasses, and an unkempt black suit and tie.

He kept his head down during most of the discourse, and mumbled his one-word answers to the talk show host. When it came time to introduce a clip from “Two Lovers” (the film he was there to promote), Phoenix couldn’t seem to remember which clip they were showing. He also forgot Gwyneth Paltrow's name.

Letterman, of course, poked a little fun at Joaquin, asking questions like, “What can you tell us about your days with the Unabomber?”

When asked about his claim to be quitting the acting business in favor of a rap career, Letterman asked Joaquin when they could expect to see some new music. Phoenix replied, "I'd love to be on the show and perform." Letterman shot back, "You know, that seems unlikely."

Finally, to end the segment, Dave shook Phoenix’s hand and stated, “Joaquin, I’m sorry you couldn’t be here tonight.”
