While the MTV European Music Awards were rocking Munich, Germany, the BAFTA/LA awards lit up Los Angeles.

The BAFTA awards honor people in the American and English entertainment industries, and there were plenty of reasons to cheer for the nominees.

Legendary Screenwriter Richard Curtis (Love Actually, Four Weddings and a Funeral) won the Humanitarian award for his work with Comic Relief and raising global awareness/support of impoverished people.

And Kate Winslet was presented with the Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year. Denzel Washington (who’s movie American Gangster opens today) took home the Stanley Kubrick Award for excellence in film.
