The Las Vegas boxing match on Saturday night brought out the stars, as some of the silver screen's biggest hitters turned out in droves.

According to Hello!, "A proud Jennifer Lopez looked on as her husband Marc Anthony sang the American anthem while Jim Carrey and girlfriend Jenny McCarthy, Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio and John Cusack took up their seats at the MGM Grand."

While Oscar night is the biggest event in the movie business, it is also a fashion show of the highest ranks. To many, one of the biggest fashion surprises at Sunday night's Academy Awards came early, with the white shoes and rust velvet tux on host Ellen DeGeneres.

While that outfit seemed like an odd choice, Meryl Streep took even more heat for her garb. Sylvia Rubin of the SF Chronicle was one of her critics.

At the star-studded Academy Awards on Sunday, Martin Scorsese's mob epic "The Departed" won best picture, earning the filmmaker the directing prize that had eluded him throughout his illustrious career.

"Could you double-check the envelope?" said Scorsese, who had been referred to as the greatest living American filmmaker without an Oscar. He also had never delivered a best-picture winner before, despite crafting such modern masterpieces as "Raging Bull" and "Goodfellas."

As was expected, Helen Mirren was honored with this year’s Academy Award for best actress. It comes as little surprise, as she pretty much swept all of the other awards shows building up to the golden Oscar itself.

This is Mirren’s first Academy Award, although she has been nominated twice before. Her portrayal of the reserved Elizabeth II in the days following Princess Diana’s shocking death in 1997 brought her overwhelming critical acclaim.

The buildup to the Oscars continues, with the Screen Actors Guild Awards held Sunday, January 28th. Top movie releases and television shows vied for yet another piece of hardware to throw in the trophy case. Also at stake, another stab at swaying Academy voters' last second ballots.

The ceremonies were attended by film and television’s leading actors at the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center. The honorees were selected by the active Guild membership nationwide.
