Elizabeth Vargas Discusses Overcoming Her Addiction
Returning to her iconic news show "20/20" after a bout with alcoholism, Elizabeth Vargas told her story in an interview with "Good Morning America" co-anchor George Stephanopoulos on Friday morning (January 24).
During the interview, George began by stating that fact that Elizabeth is, in fact, an alcoholic, to which the 51-year-old stated simply, "I am. I am an alcholic. It took me a long time to admit that to myself. It took me a long time to admit it to my family, but I am."
George also stated that she must have exerted an immense amount of effort in her attempts to both deal with her problem, and keep it a secret, and the former "World News Tonight" anchor said, "The amount of energy I expended keeping that secret, and keeping this problem hidden from view was exhausting."
Admitting also to suffering from panic attacks since she was a child, Elizabeth continued, saying, "I dealt with that anxiety, and with the stress that the anxiety brought by starting to drink. And it slowly escalated and got worse and worse."
After a 28-day recovery in rehab, Elizabeth is now a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, and she will return to the air tonight on "20/20."
