Bradley Manning: Please Refer to Me as a Woman
The notorious U.S. soldier sentenced to 35 years in jail after leaking classified government documents is making headlines again; this time for a much different reason.
On Thursday (August 22), Bradley Manning told the “Today Show” the he identifies himself as a female, wanted to be known as Chelsea Manning and requests to begin hormone treatments.
"I am Chelsea Manning. I am female," Manning explained. “Given the way that I feel, and have felt since childhood, I want to begin hormone therapy as soon as possible. I hope that you will support me in this transition."
“I also request that, starting today, you refer to me by my new name and use the feminine pronoun (except in official mail to the confinement facility). I look forward to receiving letters from supporters and having the opportunity to write back."
According to the private’s lawyer, David Coombs, he waited to share the news because of the criminal case.
This isn’t news to government, as he reportedly revealed his gender confusion to an Army supervisor, attaching a photo of himself dressed as a woman in an email.
Coombs also commented that the gender change isn’t to be grouped with female inmates, it’s so that Manning can “be comfortable in her own skin."
