Climbing into theaters in grand fashion, "The Amazing Spider-Man" is expected to exceed previous opening day box office numbers after bringing in $7.5 million in select midnight screenings last night (July 2).

According to Sony Pictures, the Marc Webb directed motion picture starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone raked in the sizable sum from 3,150 midnight screenings while $1.2 million of that came from the 300 IMAX screens.

The estimated totals come as insiders first predicted that the Marvel production would have a $27 to 30 million opening day, but newly figured numbers place the first day gross closer to the $40.4 million opening day of "Spider-Man 2" back in 2004.

Meanwhile, it's still unlikely that "The Amazing Spider-Man" will match up to the May 4, 2007 opening day of "Spider-Man 3"- which took in $59.8 million for it's opening day while ending up with a record-setting first weekend take of $151 million.
